The Jebel Toubkal is the highest peak of North Africa and soars up to a height of 4167m into the heavens in the Central High Atlas. Celebrated as the most eulogised peak, in the summer, the Toubkal offers a pleasant adventure from Imlilthat many people can tackle in two or three days without having to experience – altitude sickness, dehydration, and sunstroke. For experienced trekkers, the Winter is the best time to begin your trek as the trails get covered with snow making it a serious beast requiring specialist skills and gear.
Trekking the mountain range of Jebel Saghro is a little less difficult. It offers beautiful wintry landscape, mild temperature, and pleasant altitudes. The trails are passable without the level of difficult as Toubkal’s snowy wastes. Amaloun’Mansour is the highest peak offering an altitude of 2712m, which is much lower than the High Atlas peaks. The cave paintings are a bonus.
You can enjoy the pleasantries around or tackle the high altitude of M’Goun. Trekkers can have either or both the choices. The area is at its best in late spring when the valleys of Ait Bougmez and Tessaout are covered with carpets of wild flower. The valleys and the mountains are home to the local Berber tribes. You can also utilize the valleys inorder to acclimatize yourself before tackling the high peaks of M’Goun, which has an altitude of 4071m.
The mountain ranges are a favourite among local walkers, especially families who are interested in mild walks. If you start from the Chefchaouen base, then myriad day trip options will beckon. You can also enjoy a relaxed ideal saunter along the banks of the Ras el-Maa river. If you wish to increase the difficulty level then a hike up the Jebel al-Kalaa is the best. For overnight hiking trips, the Talassemtane National Park is the best.
This expansive national park in the Middle Atlas is called the ‘Little Switzerland’ of Morocco and offers a visual feast of its flora and fauna. The slopes are shrouded with Atlas Cedar trees in Autumn and Spring. The Ifrane National Park is also one of the last preserves of the endangered Barbary Macaque. So you must keep a look out for it throughout your trail.
